Two New Patek Philippe Chronographs - A Classic Pilots’ Complication

31 March 23

Patek Philippe’s collection of Pilot style watches welcomes its first two chronograph models: the Ref. 5924G-001 and the Ref. 5924G-010. Here, we take a first look at these new releases from Patek Philippe at Watches and Wonders 2023.

This year at Watches and Wonders, Patek Philippe introduced a chronograph complication to their Pilot style watches for the first time. The two new models, one with a khaki green dial and the other with a blue-grey dial, unite a fly-back chronograph, the ‘Travel Time’ dual time zone function and the local date indicated by hand.

The first Calatrava Pilot Travel Time launched in 2015, with Ref. 5524 and was later followed by a number of additions. These models have an instantly recognisable aesthetic, with large pushers and a distinctive aeronautical flair. Each watch features the exclusive dual time zone ‘Travel Time’ system, which is also seen in the new chronograph models. Given the popularity of the chronograph function with aviators both past and present, it makes perfect sense for Patek Philippe to bring the complication to this collection.

The two new models suit the collection in form as well as function. The white gold cases feature two large pushers, one on either side of the crown. Two more pushers are recessed on the opposite side, giving these models a pleasing asymmetrical silhouette. The Ref. 5924G-001 offers classic style with a blue-grey sunburst dial and a grained navy-blue calfskin strap. Meanwhile, the Ref. 5924G-010 presents a more military aesthetic, with a lacquered khaki green dial and an olive-green calfskin strap with a vintage finish. Both are 42mm in diameter and 13.05mm thick, with 30m of water resistance.

For both models, the dial features two sub-dials intersecting the applied Arabic hour markers at 12 and 6 o’clock. At the top is the date dial, with the first numeral picked out in red. Below is a 60-minute counter. To either side, day/night indicators are displayed in apertures for local and home time. The sub-dials are highly legible, with subtle guilloché detailing in their centres.

This dial layout takes advantage of the 42mm diameter, presenting a large amount of information while still feeling spacious. The minutes track runs around the circumference, leaving plenty of space for the sub-dials. The second time zone is indicated by a skeleton hand, easily distinguished from the solid hour and minute hands. The applied white gold numerals and sword-shaped hands are highlighted by a luminescent coating for excellent legibility.

Powering this impressive array of functions is the Caliber CH 28‑520 C FUS, visible through the sapphire crystal case back. This is a self-winding movement, with a 45-55-hour power reserve. The fly-back chronograph is beautifully integrated with the ‘Travel Time’ system, demonstrating the exceptional finesse and accuracy for which Patek Philippe is renowned.

These watches are ideal for the regular traveller, or for the watch enthusiast who enjoys keeping track of time zones elsewhere in the world. With its refined blue-grey dial, the Ref. 5924G-001 is the perfect choice for a dress watch with a touch of aeronautical glamour. Meanwhile, the Ref. 5924G-010 offers vintage style rooted in the world of 1930’s aviation. Either watch would make an excellent travel companion, or an elegant means to keep in time with business partners abroad.

A flyback chronograph is the quintessential complication for a pilots’ watch. These chronograph models are a welcome addition to Patek Philippe’s range of Pilot style watches, enhancing the collection with exceptional functionality and two new aesthetic options. With their practical functionality and timeless style, either watch would make an excellent addition to any collection.
