A Master Chronometer in Burgundy - TUDOR Black Bay

08 April 24

At Watches and Wonders 2023, TUDOR released a new Master Chronometer Black Bay with a burgundy bezel and a METAS-certified movement. This watch is an aesthetic and technical refinement of the Black Bay design, and represents the brand's commitment to technical excellence.

The Black Bay originally launched in 2012, and has since become one of TUDOR's flagship collections. As with that first model, the latest TUDOR Black Bay features a burgundy bezel and strong divers' watch functionality. However, this new iteration demonstrates just how far the brand has come in the last decade. Launched shortly after the opening of TUDOR's Le Locle manufacture, the new burgundy Black Bay is only the second of TUDOR's watches to classify as a Master Chronometer. It is a decisive statement of the brand's ambitions for their new manufacturing and testing facility.

The Master Chronometer designation is an indication of exceptional robustness and precision. Going above and beyond COSC certification, the fully assembled watch is put through a rigorous series of tests to ensure accuracy to 0/+5 seconds per day, 200m of waterproofness and magnetic resistance up to 15,000 gauss. The watch's accuracy is tested at different temperatures, orientations and levels of power reserve to ensure consistent performance even in extreme conditions. One floor of TUDOR's Le Locle manufacture is dedicated to performing these tests, with sophisticated automated systems running 24 hours a day. This is an investment in the brand's future, allowing TUDOR to push the performance of its watches to ever more ambitious heights.

This commitment to exceptional functionality encompasses the whole watch, not just the movement. The new TUDOR Black Bay is a true divers' watch, from the domed dial and crystal to the screw-down crown. The burgundy bezel is uni-directional and inscribed with a 60-minute scale, designed to allow a diver to keep track of their air supply. Powered by the self-winding manufacture calibre MT5602-U, with a 70-hour power reserve, the watch is accompanied by a 5-year international guarantee.

TUDOR has also made a number of aesthetic refinements to this iteration of the Black Bay. The 41mm case is highlighted by a mixture of polished and satin-brushed finishes, while the black dial is given a sunburst finish. The bezel has a pronounced knurled edge, improving grip while wearing gloves and providing a distinct tool watch aesthetic. Compared to previous versions, the case has been slimmed down to provide more day-to-day wearability. This change is complemented by the new five-link bracelet, which tapers around the wrist for exceptional comfort. This watch is also available on the classic TUDOR three-link bracelet or a rubber strap, as befits a divers' timepiece.

The latest burgundy TUDOR Black Bay looks to the brand's future, while staying true to its rich heritage. This is a true TUDOR divers' watch, continuing the brand's long history of creating pragmatic, robust watches for use above and below the waves. With this new iteration, TUDOR has pushed the functionality of the Black Bay collection to new heights, and made a clear statement about their commitment to ceaseless improvement and innovation. A testament to the new Le Locle manufacture, this is an embodiment of TUDOR's daring spirit.
