Since the company was founded in 1839, Patek Philippe has stood out with its consummate skills in astering horological complications, those additional functions that go beyond the display of hours, minutes, and seconds. In 1989, the manufacture presented the Calibre 89, which with 33 complications was the most complicated portable watch in the world for over 25 years. The double-face Star Caliber 2000 pocket watch (21 complications) was presented to usher in the new millennium.
This know-how also comes to the fore in wristwatches. In 2014, on the occasion of the manufacture’s 175th anniversary, Patek Philippe presented the Grandmaster Chime (20 complications), a double-face wristwatch with five chiming functions, among them two patented world debuts. As the Ref. 6300, it now joins the portfolio of regularly produced timepieces. Another highlight is the Ref. 6002 Sky Moon Tourbillon (12 complications) which pays tribute to rare artisanal virtuosity with its fully engraved case and a dial in cloisonné and champlevé enamel. With the broadest repertoire of regularly produced complicated watches, the manufacture has positioned itself as the undisputed leader in this sublime category of watchmaking artistry. Patek Philippe’s grand complication timepieces feature extremely elaborate mechanisms such as minute repeaters that sound the time on demand – one of the manufacture’s specialties – as well as tourbillon watches and split-seconds chronographs.
The perpetual calendar, also a tradition at Patek Philippe, belongs to this category as well, as do astronomical indications such as the times of sunrise and sunset or the progression of the heavenly canopy. Not rarely, these complex mechanisms are combined in one watch and supplemented with further complications – a retrograde date or instantaneously jumping displays, for example.
The manufacture is also aware of the growing affinity among women with the beauty of mechanical movements and produces several grand complications with perpetual calendars and minute repeaters in irresistibly feminine versions.
