Complications

Apart from the extremely elaborate timekeeping instruments that win over the hearts of many collectors, Patek Philippe’s collection also includes many complicated watches that are extremely useful in everyday situations and are very easy to operate.

The patented Annual Calendar (1996) is one of these exploits that appeal to people with modern, active lifestyles. With its displays of the day of the week, the month, and the date (which only has to be corrected once a year), this ingenious mechanism has become one of the manufacture’s most popular icons. It is available with different display configurations and features, and in models reserved for feminine wrists.

Travel watches are another domain in which Patek Philippe can leverage its virtuosity. The famous World Time watch that was launched in the 1930s permanently and simultaneously displays the time in all 24 time zones. In 1999, this function became even more useful with an exclusive patented mechanism that advances all indications by one hour with a single actuation of a pusher – without affecting the rate accuracy of the movement. In 1997, the manufacture extended its lineup of watches for modern nomads with the Travel Time wristwatch that displays the time in two zones at once. Its ingenious two-pusher mechanism makes it easy to move the local-time hour hand forward or backward in one-hour steps.

The repertoire of useful complications also includes Patek Philippe’s signature chronographs, ranging from the classic manually wound caliber architecture with column wheels and wheel clutches in models for men and women to latest-generation self-winding Annual Calendar chronographs with monocounters. To this very day, the moon-phase display remains one of the most popular and poetic functions, but it is also appreciated due to its exceptional precision: it only needs to be corrected by one day every 122 years.
