Your Chosen Design Explained...

At Prestons we understand that choosing a piece of jewellery is a very personal decision. Here we explore the individual elements of your chosen design and how they combine to create the value and beauty of this incredible piece.

Diamonds

Our showrooms understand that a diamond does not have to be flawless to be beautiful but recognise the importance of finding a diamond that is exquisitely you. A diamond is an incredibly rare precious gemstone formed over billions of years through extreme heat and pressure. In order to begin your journey to selecting the perfect diamond, it is essential to understand the principal characteristics which make each diamond as unique and as rare as you are. The 4 C’s are the basics of diamond grading, referring to the carat weight, colour, clarity, and cut grade and it is a combination of these four characteristics which combine to create your diamond's overall value.

The Round Brilliant Cut

The round brilliant cut diamond is famously the most traditional diamond cut and has been around for many centuries. In 1919 the modern round brilliant cut was redefined by Marcel Tolkowsky who explored the specific angles and proportions which would allow the maximum amount of light, brilliance and fire to reflect through this precious and rare gemstone. Today, the brilliant-cut remains a timeless choice for a classic pair of diamond ear studs, a contemporary diamond bangle or an engagement ring with a truly brilliant sparkle.

White Gold

The metals or materials we choose for our fine jewellery collections are equally as important as the exceptional gemstones they hold. 18ct white gold is created by mixing gold with other precious metals that have a silvery-white colour to ensure its durability and strength. This particular precious metal is the most popular choice for fine jewellery pieces as the silvery-white colour allows the colour of the diamonds or gemstones to show through. It is, however, important to consider the natural colour of white gold. In order to achieve this silvery-white colour, this metal is plated in a luxurious substance called rhodium. This plating is highly reflective, adding shine, lustre and durability, but it is however just a coating and therefore white gold is often considered more suitable for jewellery pieces such as necklaces, earrings or bracelets.
